Mapping Study of the Civil Society Sector in the Horn of Africa

We are currently engaged in a comprehensive mapping study of the civil society sector in the Horn of Africa, commissioned by the Horn Center for Democracy (HCD). This project covers the IGAD member states, including Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and South Sudan.

Scope of the Study:

Country Coverage: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, and South Sudan.
Objective: To map the landscape of civil society actors across these countries, providing a thorough understanding of their roles, challenges, and contributions.

APEX LLC's Role:

Empirical Data Collection: Conducting extensive fieldwork and gathering empirical data from various civil society organizations (CSOs) and stakeholders within the IGAD member states.
Data Analysis: Analyzing the collected data to identify key trends, challenges, and opportunities within the civil society sector.
Database Development: Creating a detailed and comprehensive database that documents the civil society landscapes in each country, including profiles of major organizations, their activities, and their impact.

Civil Rights Defenders (CRD) and Ethiopian Human Rights Defenders Center

Conflict Impact Assessment Study (March 2024 – May 2024)

We recently conducted an assessment study of the impact of conflict on Human Rights Organizations (HROs) and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Northern Ethiopia. This project was coordinated in collaboration with Mekele, Semera, and Afar Universities.

Scope of the Study:

Regions Covered: Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions.
Objective: To assess the impact of conflict on HROs and HRDs, providing insights for strategic planning and program interventions to support local human rights organizations’ post-conflict recovery efforts and accountability for human rights violations.

APEX LLC's Role:

Research Coordination: Coordinating a team of researchers to conduct extensive research on the conflict's impact in the specified regions.
Collaboration: Working in coordination with Mekele, Semera, and Afar Universities to gather and analyze data.
Comprehensive Reporting: Developing a comprehensive report, including insights for strategic planning and program interventions to support local human rights organizations' post-conflict recovery efforts.
Strategic Planning: Providing input and advice to Civil Rights Defenders for their Ethiopia programming, including strategic and programmatic intervention recommendations.
